While it is commonly referred to by repair technicians as a “charging IC”, it acts as a multi-functional power controller handling several distinct operations
- USB and Battery Charging Control: It monitors, regulates, and optimizes the incoming power flow from the USB port to safely charge the device’s lithium-ion battery.
- Fuel Gauge: It keeps track of the battery’s state of charge (percentage), voltage, and health metrics to communicate accurate data to the primary processor.
- Buck Converters: Steps down higher input voltages to lower, highly efficient operating voltages needed by surrounding hardware subsystems.
- LDO (Low Drop-Out) Regulators: Provides clean, low-noise, stable linear voltage lines to sensitive peripheral components on the motherboard.
Common Symptoms of a Faulty SM5703
When this chip malfunctions, the device will typically display the following diagnostic issues:
- The phone fails to register a charger or does not show a charging indicator.
- Extremely slow charging or “fake charging” (where the percentage stalls or drops while plugged in).
- Fast battery drain or erratic fluctuations in the displayed battery percentage.
- Disproportionate overheating concentrated near the USB or power management sections of the motherboard.
- Complete power-on failure if a critical Buck or LDO rail managed by the chip short-circuits.
